If you love fish, then you probably already know that it is pretty darn good for you. It helps reduce your risk of heart disease, it reduces the chances of blood clots, and reduces total mortality by 17%. These facts alone, along with the delicious taste, increase my love for fish, but did you know that eating fish just once a week also reduces your risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by a whopping 40%?

A recent 10-year study of 40,000 female health professionals found that those who ate fish (canned tuna, salmon and sardines) once a week, had about 40% lower risk of developing AMD. These results suggest that by eating just one serving of dark-meat fish per week, you can reduce your chances of developing AMD.

There are so many yummy recipes containing fish. Take a look at this Homemade Tuna Salad recipe off the Food Network website. It’s the perfect quick summer lunch. If you are interested in more recipes containing fish, check out this Viteyes Pinterest board.

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body, and is found in some foods, added to others and is available as a dietary supplement. Calcium is needed for good teeth, strong bones and for the proper function of nerves, muscles, kidneys, and the heart. Not having enough calcium in the diet is one of many factors associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis, a disease that speeds up the process of the natural loss of calcium in the bones.

Vitamin Health offers a calcium supplement, Neoflex® Calcium, that contains 1200 mg of calcium and 1000 IU of Vitamin D in two easy tablets daily for all your calcium needs. Males and females between the ages of 19 and 50 should be getting at least 1,000mg of calcium per day. Females between the ages of 51 and 70 should be getting at least 1,000mg per day, while males should be getting at least 1200mg per day. Both males and females ages 71+ should be getting 1200mg of calcium per day. Keep this in mind when choosing your calcium supplement.

There is something to keep in mind of when taking a calcium supplement; calcium carbonate, in Neoflex® Calcium, should be taken with a meal because it needs stomach acid to be absorbed.

Research has shown that kale is particularly good at promoting good eyesight, due to the large amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin in this leafy green veggie. Spinach and broccoli are the other 2 green super foods that contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin. Make a delicious salad with spinach and broccoli, or some kale chips and enjoy these yummy foods while promoting your eye health, too!

In honor of St. Patty’s Day coming up, let’s focus on the benefits of green foods!

Kale is a forgotten super food. It’s relatively inexpensive (about $1.99 for a head), and it has many uses! Kale contains lutein, which helps prevent blindness and even helps lower cholesterol. Kale can be sautéed, baked and even be put in soup. Here is a recipe for kale chips, my favorite thing to make with kale.

Green tea is packed with antioxidants. According to Harvard Health Publications, studies have found an association between consuming green tea and a reduced risk for several cancers, including, skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder. Regular consumers also have a reduced risk for heart disease. To get the most out of these benefits, drink a cup of green tea a few times a day to absorb antioxidants and other healthful plant compounds.

Today on The Doctors television show they were discussing how avocados can promote eye health, so stock up on your avocados as well!! Guacamole anyone?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

Omega-3 has many uses; it can benefit your heart, eyes, skin and now, it may even promote the health of your nervous system.

A new study, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, shows that omega-3 fatty acids could play an important role in preventing damage to nerves, and may help them to regenerate when damage does occur.*

This new research in mice has shown that a high level of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the body could lead to protection of nerve cells and have beneficial effects on the recovery of nerves after a peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Led by scientists from Queen Mary, University of London, UK, their findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids could play a significant role in speeding up recovery from nerve injury.

The scientists who conducted this study pointed out that although further work is needed, the initial research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids can protect damaged nerve cells, which is a critical first step in a successful neurological recovery.

Right now, Vitamin Health is offering 20% off Viteyes Omega-3 for 48 hours only! Use coupon code BRK333. Cannot be combined with other offers. As always, check with your doctor before changing your vitamin regimen.
