Omega-3 has many uses; it can benefit your heart, eyes, skin and now, it may even promote the health of your nervous system.
A new study, published in The Journal of Neuroscience, shows that omega-3 fatty acids could play an important role in preventing damage to nerves, and may help them to regenerate when damage does occur.*
This new research in mice has shown that a high level of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the body could lead to protection of nerve cells and have beneficial effects on the recovery of nerves after a peripheral nerve injury (PNI). Led by scientists from Queen Mary, University of London, UK, their findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids could play a significant role in speeding up recovery from nerve injury.
The scientists who conducted this study pointed out that although further work is needed, the initial research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids can protect damaged nerve cells, which is a critical first step in a successful neurological recovery.
