About AREDS:
In October 2001 The National Eye Institute (NEI), part of the Federal government's National Institutes of Health, completed a 10 year major clinical study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). AREDS proved that patients taking a special formula of antioxidant vitamins plus zinc were more likely to retain their macular health. This formula is found in Viteyes® AREDS Formula.

About Lutein:
Lutein is highly concentrated in the macula, a small area of the retina responsible for central vision, and high visual acuity. Lutein cannot be made by the body and therefore must be obtained from food or dietary supplements. Many studies show lutein has positive benefits on AMD.

Daily Multivitamin:
The daily multivitamin is included in this formula is a benefit for you because you don't have to take any additional pills for your daily multivitamin. In addition, there are no duplicates from a separate multivitamin of vitamins A, C, E, zinc and copper that are already included in your AREDS formula.

Why does Viteyes® AREDS Powder contain lutiein in addition to the AREDS formula and daily multivitamin?
Lutein has been the news frequently for new studies on eye, heart and skin health. Below are a couple studies highlighting the link between lutein and macular health.

Lutein has been shown to improve visual sharpness in patients with AMD, according to the recent LAST trial (Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial).* The study's findings suggest that AMD symptoms may be reversed through lutein supplementation.

Researchers studying th 4,519 Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) participants found that lutein and zeaxanthin absorb blue light that could damage the macula by preventing free radicals from damaging eye cells and by strengthening eye cell membranes.** This study concluded that long-term lutein intake may lower your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.

**This study, published in Archives of Ophthalmology, concluded  that a higher intake of lutein and zeaxanthin may help lower the risk for AMD.
