ZINC: ARE YOUR AREDS 2 PATIENTS TAKING TOO MUCH?
The National Institute’s of Health’s Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of Zinc is 40 mg. This is the “maximum daily intake unlikely to cause adverse health effects.” Some AREDS 2 brands use double this level (80 mg)!
In 2001, the original AREDS study utilized 80 mg of zinc. However, some nutritionists were concerned the dose was too high.* The AREDS 2 study tested both 80 mg of zinc and a lower dose of 25 mg of zinc. The investigators found no significant changes in the effectiveness of the formulation when they lowered zinc.* “Lowering zinc to the AREDS formulation also had no effect on AMD progression.”**
The NIH’s Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of Zinc is 40 mg. If your patient is taking an AREDS 2 with 80 mg of zinc, that is DOUBLE THIS TOLERABLE LEVEL. The UL of Zinc, 40 mg, is the “maximum daily intake unlikely to cause adverse health effects.” “Zinc toxicity can occur in both acute and chronic forms.”^
All Viteyes AREDS 2 formulas are formulated with 25 mg of Zinc and can be taken in a single daily dosing.
